12 Types of Denim Wash Processes

GARMENT WASH

Garment wash is a standard industrial denim washing process using controlled water temperature, detergent, rinsing and softener to make the fabric softer, cleaner and more natural.

It is usually processed at around 60–90°C. Depending on washing time and chemical usage, it can create light, normal or heavy washing effects.

STONE WASH

Stone wash adds pumice stones into the washing machine. The stones tumble and rub against denim garments to create a naturally worn and vintage surface effect.

It can be combined with washing or bleaching. Different stones and washing conditions create different levels of abrasion, softness and aged denim texture.

SNOW WASH

Snow wash, also called acid snow wash, uses treated pumice stones to rub against denim garments during tumbling, creating irregular fading and snow-like white spots.

This process gives denim a high-contrast washed look with vintage texture and unique surface variation depending on fabric and washing conditions.

ENZYME WASH

Enzyme wash uses cellulase enzymes to gently break down surface fibers under controlled pH and temperature, giving denim a softer hand feel and smoother surface.

It helps reduce fuzziness and creates a natural fading effect. When combined with stone wash, it is commonly called enzyme-stone wash.

BLEACH WASH

Bleach wash is used to create a cleaner, brighter or lighter denim appearance. After regular washing and rinsing, the garment is heated to around 60°C.

A suitable amount of bleaching agent is added according to the required shade. The process usually takes 7–10 minutes and can be divided into oxygen bleach and chlorine bleach.

ENZYME STONE WASH

Enzyme stone wash combines pumice stone abrasion with enzyme washing. The stones first tumble with denim garments to create a worn and faded base effect.

Cellulase enzymes then gently clean surface fibers and residual sizing, making the color softer, more even and giving denim a long-lasting soft hand feel.

OVERDYE WASH

Overdye wash is a denim coloration process applied on indigo-dyed fabric. Through secondary dyeing, garment dyeing or wash-based overdying, denim gains richer color layers.

This technique creates vintage texture, multi-tone depth and special visual effects, making denim garments more unique for custom fashion and private label collections.

SAND WASH

Sand wash commonly uses alkaline and oxidizing auxiliaries to give denim a faded, aged and slightly worn appearance after washing.

When combined with stone wash, the fabric surface can develop a soft, frosted texture. Softener is then added to improve fabric softness, comfort and wearability.

GARMENT DYEING

Garment dyeing is a denim finishing process applied after the jeans are already sewn. It gives finished denim garments a second layer of color, texture and visual character.

This process is not only about coloring. It helps create unique shades, vintage effects, custom tones and special fashion finishes for private label denim collections.

WHISKERS

Whiskers are faded crease lines created on denim, usually around the hip, thigh and knee areas. They imitate the natural wear marks formed after long-term wearing.

Whisker effects can be made by hand sanding, 3D pressing or spray techniques. Common styles include regular whiskers, three-dimensional whiskers and hand-brushed whiskers.

PP SPRAY WASH

PP spray wash is usually applied after regular denim washing. Potassium permanganate solution is sprayed onto the garment according to the required design.

The chemical reaction fades the fabric surface. The fading level is controlled by concentration and spray amount. After spraying, the garment is rinsed clean to finish the effect.

DESTROY WASH

Destroy wash creates intentional damage on denim garments through stone abrasion, chemical auxiliaries and manual finishing techniques.

Specific areas such as knees, hems, pockets or edges are treated to create ripped, broken and heavily worn effects, giving the finished garment a strong vintage look.
